Asmara capital city of Eritrea, home to over 400 Art Deco buildings, certified by UNESCO as world heritage. Same of the site we are Fiat Tagliero Building, Tank Graveyard, Opera House ( is one of Asmara’s most elegant early–20th-century buildings), Imperial Palace ( it was used as a winter palace by Emperor Haile Selassie during the federation with Ethiopia),
Adulis was once the primary port of the Aksumite empire and a few impressive architectural remnants of this heritage remain. Most notable is the foundation of a large 5th-century Byzantine basilica. Archaeological work at Adulis (begun in 1840!)
A guided tour will lead to the most interesting and unusual places in Asmara, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The visitor will visit like the Brewery built 1940, The Eritrea Museum, The tank graveyard, remnants from the war between Eritrea and Ethiopia from 1961-19
The journey to Massawa begins in the afternoon by driving down from Asmara to the East through the Massawa-Nefasit route, from an altitude of 2400 meters to Massawa at zero sea level in about 3 hours. Visitors will experience three climatic changes along the way – cool, moderate, and hot climate. A brief coffee break will be essential at Ghinday and dinner will be at Massawa.
OVERNIGHT IN Massawa, Grand Dahlak Hotel, or similar.
Driving further to the south East of Massawa, Visitors will observe the ancient port of Adulis some 70 kilometers far from the Port City of Massawa. Zula is also adjacent to Adulis. These two ancient ports were a hub to the then vibrant trade that prevailed in the middle east.
In 1868 A British Military Expedition led by General Napier built a 21-kilometer railway from Zula to kumaile. They used the short railway to transport their Elephants, donkeys, and their army personnel to a long journey of 600 kilometers inside Ethiopia, namely the province of Gondar in northwest Ethiopia, to fight against King Tewodros the then Emperor of Ethiopia.
OVERNIGHT IN Massawa, Grand Dahlak Hotel, or similar.
Massawa enjoys a combination of Turkish and Italian Architects, an apparent indication of the Ottoman and Italian colonial history. There is, among others, an old Turkish Palace and the Modern Port built by the Titians at the turn of the 20th Century. A more than one thousand years mosque is still standing to this day. A great attraction to many visitors
In addition to the city’s attractions, pristine beaches and enjoyable swimming are available just a short distance from the city center.
Massawa is relatively cool during October to March. However, from April to September, it will be hot and humid.
