        Practical travel information for Somaliland

Essential Travel Information: Laas Geel & Hargeisa

Somaliland is one of the most rewarding and genuinely safe destinations in the Horn of Africa. Below is everything you need to know before booking this 2-day tour.

        Is Somaliland Safe to Visit?

Somaliland has maintained peace and stability since declaring independence from Somalia in 1991. It has its own elected government, currency, police force, and borders. Hargeisa is a calm and walkable city. Crime against tourists is rare. Somaliland is frequently cited by experienced travellers as one of the most genuinely hospitable destinations in Africa. It is entirely separate from the security situation in southern Somalia.

        Visa for Somaliland

All nationalities receive a Somaliland visa on arrival at Egal International Airport in Hargeisa. The visa costs USD 61, paid in cash on arrival; we confirm the current fee with your booking. We provide a Letter of Invitation with your booking confirmation, which simplifies the immigration process. Bring your passport (valid 6+ months) and a recent passport photo. Check the latest requirements for your specific nationality when booking.

        Money & Currency in Somaliland

Somaliland uses its own Somaliland Shilling (SLS), which is not traded internationally. USD is widely accepted for hotels, tours, and larger purchases. Bring cash in USD. ATMs are limited and card payments are not widely available outside major hotels. Your tour cost can be paid via bank transfer; on-the-ground expenses are in USD or SLS.

Best Time to Visit Somaliland & Laas Geel

Somaliland has a semi-arid climate. The most pleasant time to visit is October to April, with temperatures in Hargeisa ranging from 22–30°C. Laas Geel can be visited year-round, but avoid the short rains (April–May) and long rains (June–August) when the access road can become difficult. The dry season from October to March is ideal.

        Getting to Hargeisa

Egal International Airport (HGA) in Hargeisa is served by: Ethiopian Airlines from Addis Ababa, flydubai from Dubai, Air Arabia from Sharjah, Jubba Airways from Mogadishu and Nairobi, and Daallo Airlines regionally. Most travellers route through Addis Ababa or Dubai. Your guide meets you on arrival.

        Permits for Laas Geel

All visits to Laas Geel require a permit from Somaliland's Ministry of Tourism. A Ministry-appointed local site guide is mandatory at Laas Geel in addition to your private guide. We arrange all permits and coordination on your behalf as part of this tour booking. No independent access to Laas Geel is possible.

How do I pay for the tour?

We require a deposit (usually 20–30%) to confirm your booking, payable by bank transfer in USD or EUR. The balance is paid on arrival in cash (USD preferred). We send you a full invoice and banking details with your confirmation. Contact us to discuss payment options.

        Can I customise the itinerary?

Yes. This 2-day tour can be extended to include Berbera (Ottoman architecture and beaches), Sheikh (mountain scenery and colonial ruins), or combined with our longer Somaliland tours or the 7-day Eritrea, Djibouti & Somaliland expedition. Tell us your interests and travel dates and we will build the best itinerary for you.

Frequently Asked Questions: Laas Geel & Somaliland

Quick answers to the most common questions travellers ask before booking this tour.

Is Somaliland the same as Somalia?

No. Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 following the collapse of the Somali central government. It is a self-governing territory with its own elected president, currency, army, and foreign affairs. While not internationally recognised, it functions as a stable and independent state. It is safe to visit and is entirely separate from the security situation in southern Somalia and Mogadishu.

What language is spoken in Somaliland?

The official language is Somali, with Arabic and English also widely spoken especially in Hargeisa. Your guide will be English-speaking throughout. Somali people are exceptionally welcoming to international visitors, and language is rarely a barrier.

What should I wear when visiting Laas Geel and Hargeisa?

Somaliland is a Muslim-majority society. Modest dress is expected and appreciated: long trousers or skirts, shoulders covered, especially in markets and at religious sites. At Laas Geel itself, sturdy walking shoes are essential as the path to the shelters involves some light scrambling on rocks. Sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses) is important year-round.
