How to travel to Horn of Africa

Travel across the Horn of Africa works when one operator sequences it. We hold the visas, book the connecting flights and order the countries so the logistics flow, with Eritrea, whose outbound connections are the fewest, placed where the available flights allow.

Visas: one operator, all the paperwork

A multi-country Horn trip works only when a single operator holds the whole chain. Each country enters differently: Eritrea’s visa on arrival, which we file and Eritrean immigration approves; Djibouti’s e-visa, applied for online with the invitation letter we send you; Somaliland’s USD 61 visa on arrival at Hargeisa or Berbera; and Somalia’s eTAS with sponsor letter, arranged before you fly.

We prepare, submit and track every one of them in the right order, so no leg of the route waits on a document.

Routing: through a hub

There is no direct Asmara–Addis Ababa flight and the Eritrea–Ethiopia land border is closed, so legs between countries route through a hub such as Cairo or Dubai. We book every connection.

This is why the countries have to be sequenced deliberately, not just added together.

Order of countries: Eritrea last

The sequence matters. Eritrea’s outbound connections are limited, so we place it at the end of the chain and build the rest of the route around it.

Ordering the countries correctly is what keeps the logistics flowing across a two- or three-country trip.

Getting around: end to end

Every multi-country journey is private and held together by one team: the connecting flights, the border crossings and every transfer in each country.

You are never handed between operators; the same team plans and runs the whole route.

Is a multi-country trip safe?

Each country on the route is planned to its own rules, with vetted local teams throughout, from relaxed, walkable Asmara to high-security Mogadishu.

You travel supported and guided in every country, never independently between them.

Laas Geel and Historic Mogadishu

See the 5,000-year-old rock art of Laas Geel in Somaliland and the weathered coral-stone old town of Mogadishu on Somalia’s Indian Ocean coast.

Ancient Aksum and the Nile Cultures

Stand among the towering stelae of Aksum, then journey to the Nilotic cattle cultures of South Sudan, antiquity and living tradition side by side.

Natural Wonders of the Horn of Africa

The Danakil Depression and Lake Assal

Two of the lowest, hottest and most surreal landscapes on the planet, straddling Ethiopia and Djibouti, lava lakes, salt flats and steaming chimneys.

The Simien and Ethiopian Highlands

Trek dramatic escarpments among endemic wildlife in some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in Africa.

The Dahlak Islands and Red Sea

Eritrea’s pristine Dahlak Archipelago and the Gulf of Tadjoura in Djibouti offer world-class diving, coral reefs and seasonal whale sharks.

The Sudd and the Great Migration

South Sudan’s vast Nile wetlands and one of the largest mammal migrations on earth complete the region’s incredible natural range.

About Horn of Africa

The Horn of Africa is four or five countries in one journey: Asmara's Art Deco boulevards, Djibouti's salt lakes, Somaliland's 5,000-year-old rock art and the Indian-Ocean light of Mogadishu, threaded into a single route by one operator who knows every border.

Multi-country travel here is about sequencing: flights, visas and borders that only work in the right order. That is our home ground.

Geography, history and culture

Cultural Experiences Across the Horn of Africa

The Horn of Africa is a cultural crossroads where Africa meets Arabia across the Red Sea. Within one region you will find ancient Christian and Islamic civilisations, dozens of languages, nomadic and seafaring traditions, and some of the warmest hospitality on the continent.

Regional Cuisine

From Ethiopian injera and spiced stews to Eritrean and Italian-influenced coffee culture, Somali rice and seafood and Nilotic river fish, the Horn offers one of Africa’s most varied and delicious food journeys.

Festivals and Celebrations

  • Timket and Meskel – spectacular Orthodox festivals in Ethiopia and Eritrea.
  • Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha – major Islamic celebrations across the region.
  • National independence days – vivid, proud celebrations in each country.

Geography of the Horn of Africa

The Horn packs more diversity into a compact region than almost anywhere on earth, from 4,500 m highland peaks to below-sea-level salt pans, Red Sea coral islands and vast Nile wetlands.

  • Highlands – the Ethiopian and Eritrean plateaus and Simien Mountains.
  • Rift Valley and deserts – the Danakil Depression and Lake Assal.
  • Coasts and wetlands – the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Sudd.

History of the Horn of Africa

Ancient Crossroads

Linked by the Red Sea, the Kingdom of Aksum and the frankincense trade, the Horn was a hub of exchange between Africa, Arabia, Rome, Persia and India for millennia.

The Colonial Era

Italian, French and British powers drew the borders of much of the region, while Ethiopia is one of only two African nations (with Liberia) never permanently colonised, victorious at Adwa in 1896, though under a five-year Italian occupation from 1936 to 1941.

Modern Nations

From Eritrean and South Sudanese independence to Somaliland’s self-rule, the Horn’s modern states each carry a fiercely distinct identity – which is exactly what makes travelling across them so rewarding.

Cultural Diversity in the Horn of Africa

Home to scores of ethnic groups and languages and a near-even balance of Christianity and Islam, the Horn of Africa is one of the most culturally rich regions on the continent, where every border crossing brings a new world to discover.

Questions

Horn of Africa travel FAQ

Which countries make up the Horn of Africa?

The Horn of Africa comprises Eritrea, Djibouti, Somalia, Somaliland, Ethiopia and South Sudan. We design multi-country tours combining any two or more of these destinations.

Can I really visit several Horn of Africa countries in one trip?

Yes. The usual combinations are Eritrea with Djibouti, Somaliland with Somalia, or all four in one run. Eritrea and Ethiopia can be combined, but only through a third country, since there is no direct flight and the land border is closed. We prepare and track every entry document, permit and connecting flight on the route.

How long should a multi-country tour be?

Allow 7 to 16 days depending on how many countries you include: a week covers two, and the longest chain (Eritrea, Ethiopia and Djibouti) runs 16 days. We tailor the pace and route to your interests and time.

Is the Horn of Africa safe for tourists?

Much of the region is safe to visit with the right local partner. We continuously monitor conditions and design every itinerary around secure, well-travelled routes with experienced local guides.

When is the best time for a Horn of Africa tour?

November to March. It is the one window when the highlands are dry and the coast is calm at the same time, which is what a multi-country route needs. October works for Eritrea and Ethiopia on their own, but the coast is still hot.

Do you arrange all the visas and permits?

Yes. Multi-country travel involves several visas and travel permits, and we handle the entire process and all invitation letters as part of your booking.

What currencies will I need?

Each country has its own currency, but US dollars in cash are accepted or exchangeable throughout. We advise exactly how much to carry for each leg of your journey.

How do I travel between the countries?

You fly between countries and travel privately with our guides on the ground, all coordinated by us. Legs into and out of Eritrea route through Cairo, Dubai, Jeddah or Istanbul: there is no Asmara–Addis Ababa flight and the Eritrea–Ethiopia land border is closed. Elsewhere on the route, Addis Ababa, Djibouti and Nairobi are the usual connecting hubs.

What vaccinations do I need for the Horn of Africa?

A yellow fever certificate is required for several countries, and malaria precautions, hepatitis A, typhoid and tetanus are recommended. Consult a travel clinic well before departure.
