- 02March–May, shoulder.Warming up; still workable early on, but the whale sharks tail off and the heat builds.
- 03June–August, avoid.Extreme coastal heat (often 40–45°C) and dusty, hot winds. Best only for stopovers.
- 04September–October, improving.Heat easing; the first whale sharks can appear at the very end of October, but the season only becomes reliable from November.
What this means for your trip
If whale sharks are the goal, aim for December or January. If you are focused on Lake Assal and Lake Abbe, anywhere in the November-to-February window is comfortable, the salt flats and Afar plain are punishing in summer heat. Combining both is exactly why the cool season is the sweet spot. We run our own Djibouti departures almost entirely inside this window, the same drive to Lake Abbe that is a pleasure in December is an endurance test in July.
