In this Archeological tour to Eritrea – 5 Days Tour we will visit sites like archeological site Quhaito, ancient port city of Adulis, also known as Adulis. Eritrea is an ancient land with its history that goes back as far as the stone ages. Being a strategic focal point along the Red sea coast close to Arabian Peninsula, Indian Peninsula, Far East and Europe, it had been part of past great civilizations and charmed many colonizers starting from the Turkish to Ethiopia. As a result, Eritrea now contains sediments of many world civilizations.

Places with we are going to visit under this Archeological tour to Eritrea – 5 Days Tour are:- Thrilling trekking to Qohaito (Kohaito), to Metera (Matara/ Belew Kelew), equivalent to an important ancient town named Koleo from 2nd century AD, situated 20km south of Qohaito, house some of Eritrea’s most important historical sites. Tank Graveyard, Opera House ( is one of Asmara’s most elegant early–20th-century buildings), Imperial Palace ( it was used as a winter palace by Emperor Haile Selassie during the federation with Ethiopia), and more other places.
Arrive in the morning hours in Asmara and our English speaking tour guide will be waiting for you at the airport and transfer you to our office to discuss the itinerary.
The trip to Massawa starts in the afternoon with a drive on the Massawa – Nefasit-Route from Asmara towards the east. You drive from 2400 meters above sea level to Massawa at sea level in about 3 hours. Visitors will experience three different climate zones along the way – cool, temperate, and hot. A short coffee break will be essential in Ghinday. Before we move on to Massawa.

In the early morning, we drive about 70 km south of Massawa to the old port of Adulis. It is a river port that served as a center of trade between the highlands of Eritrea and Ethiopia and the surrounding areas in the rest of the country.
Zula is nearby. Both ports were at the center of the trade of the time, which was predominant in the Middle East. Then, already in the 7th century BC, civilizations developed. It is assumed that Adulis was a large city of that time. A small part of the city buried underneath today has been excavated, but there is still too much to see.
Following a memorable stay in Adulis, In the late afternoon return to Massawa.

Driving early morning from Massawa to Dekemhare is an enjoyable ascending from Zero sea levels to a gradual climbing to Gahtelai and Nefasit.
We take a turn by the Nefasit on the way to Dekemhare. Dekemhare is a beautiful town that was founded in the 15th century as a small village and advanced by the Italians into a town serving as a transportation hub for the extension of their invasion late as an industrial zone. Various art deco style buildings and large rocks surrounding the town.

After breakfast, we head to the archeological site Quhaito, a once trade center city. visitors will enjoy the archaeological site in Quhaito. An ancient dam, some standing pillars, traces of ancient palace, Rock paintings and tombs. Included is also the breathtaking view of the Grand Canyon.
We head back to Asmara and visit Segheneiti on our way. To see a huge sycamore tree locally known as Da’aro Hamushte.

Asmara, the capital of Eritrea is the largest City. Lying at an altitude of 2400 meters above sea level the City has a year-round pleasant climate at a range of 18-25 Celsius. Even during the summertime, Asmara has an enjoyable climate.
The modern city of Asmara was literally created by the Italians between the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th Century. The city’s elegant streets and the adjoining promenade are comfortable for day or night walking. The city now accommodates more than 400 art Deco buildings officially recognized by UNESCO. The city maintains its cleanliness, which is commended by many visitors. One of the attractive features of Asmara, in particular, and the country, in general, is that it is the safest place to enjoy. One would feel as if one is in Rome when touring Asmara. Many Italians use to call it “Asmara Bella” .meaning “Asmara the beautiful”.

*All visitors need an Entry Visa. To get it before your arrival visit Eritrean Embassies in your home country. Only for those countries where there are no Eritrean Embassies can an entry visa be obtained on arrival at the airport in Asmara.
* Travel Permits is required for all foreign nationals who wish to leave the Asmara region. Travel permits are sought on the spot in Eritrea. The issuing of such a travel permit is handled by Adulis Travel. To obtain a travel permit, you will need to present a photocopy of your passport details and visa pages.
