Fly to Bahir Dar - Lake Tana & Blue Nile Falls
Fly north to Bahir Dar on the shore of Lake Tana, the source of the Blue Nile. Board a boat across the lake to the Zege Peninsula, where centuries-old island monasteries hide vivid religious murals among the coffee forests. In the afternoon drive out to the thundering Blue Nile Falls - 'Tis Issat', the water that smokes - walking through villages and over a 17th-century Portuguese bridge for the finest views.

Gondar - the Camelot of Africa
Drive to Gondar, Ethiopia's 17th-century imperial capital, often called the Camelot of Africa. Explore the Royal Enclosure (Fasil Ghebbi), a UNESCO-listed compound of fairy-tale castles built by Emperor Fasilides and his successors. Visit Fasilides' Bath, still flooded each year for the Timkat festival, and the Debre Berhan Selassie church, whose ceiling of winged cherub faces is one of Ethiopia's most photographed sights.

Simien Mountains National Park
Set off early into the Simien Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of jagged peaks, plunging escarpments and chess-piece pinnacles. The views across the Rift highlands are among the most spectacular in Africa. Return to Gondar for the night.

What is the best time to visit Lalibela?
October to March is the dry season and the best time to visit Lalibela and the northern historic route. For a spectacular cultural experience, visit during Ethiopian Christmas (Genna) on 7 January, when thousands of pilgrims gather at the rock-hewn churches.
How many days do I need for the northern historic route?
This 8-day tour covers the essential northern circuit of Lalibela, Gondar, the Simien Mountains and Aksum. A shorter 4-5 day trip can focus on Lalibela alone, while 10-12 days allows a more relaxed pace with extra time in the Simien Mountains.
Are the Lalibela churches still in use?
Yes. The eleven rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, carved in the 12th and 13th centuries, remain active places of Ethiopian Orthodox worship. You will see priests, deacons and pilgrims using the churches during your visit.
