Arrival in Mogadishu
Met at Aden Adde International Airport, where your guide assists with your visa on arrival and transfers you to the Shamo Hotel for a briefing. After a short orientation of the city, there is time to relax and swim at Lido Beach, Mogadishu's favourite stretch of Indian Ocean sand. Return to the hotel for the night, ready for a full day of sightseeing tomorrow.

Mogadishu City Tour
After breakfast, start the day at the Mogadishu fish market, one of the most photogenic places in the city, alive with activity in the morning hours. See the old harbour, the oldest port in Somalia, and the iconic Mogadishu lighthouse, rebuilt in the Italian colonial era; the brave can climb its war-damaged staircase for sweeping views over the bay. There is time for lunch at a local Somali restaurant, then explore the bazaars and Mogadishu Mall for a feel of everyday life in Somalia. Continue to the SYL Monument, honouring the Somali Youth League, Somalia's first political party, founded on 15 May 1943, and the Dhagaxtuur Monument, symbol of the struggle against colonial rule. Finish at the Union Mosque, one of the largest religious sites in the Horn of Africa with capacity for over 10,000 worshippers, before returning to the Shamo Hotel for the night.

Departure from Mogadishu
After breakfast, your security escort transfers you to Aden Adde International Airport in good time for your onward flight. There is no sightseeing on the final day. Your Mogadishu expedition comes to an end.

Practical travel information for Somalia
Visa & invitation letter
A Somali visa and an official invitation letter are required. We arrange the invitation letter for all booked guests. It is essential for both visa approval and airport clearance. The visa itself is issued on arrival at Aden Adde International Airport. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your return date.
Security & escort
A government-appointed security escort and a licensed local guide accompany you throughout the expedition. This is mandatory in Mogadishu and included in the price. We run private departures only and coordinate all security arrangements in advance.
Travel insurance
Comprehensive travel and medical insurance is required for all journeys, including cover for emergency medical evacuation. We are happy to recommend a suitable policy.
Health & vaccinations
Consult a travel clinic at least six weeks before departure. Hepatitis A, typhoid and tetanus are generally recommended, and a yellow-fever certificate may be required depending on your routing. Anti-malarial precautions are commonly advised for coastal Somalia.
Money & payments
US dollars are widely accepted in Mogadishu. Bring smaller, recent-year notes. Card acceptance is very limited, so carry sufficient cash for meals, tips and incidentals.
Getting to Mogadishu
Aden Adde International Airport is served by flights from Addis Ababa, Istanbul, Dubai, Nairobi, Djibouti and Doha. Your guide and security team meet you on arrival and handle the transfer to the Shamo Hotel.
Dress & etiquette
Somalia is a conservative Muslim country. Modest dress is expected: long trousers or skirts and covered shoulders for all visitors, and a headscarf for women at religious sites such as the Union Mosque. Always ask before photographing people.
