Seven reasons to travel the Horn of Africa in 2026

Uncrowded, safe and astonishingly varied, the Horn of Africa rewards the curious traveller like nowhere else. Here are seven reasons, from the Dahlak reefs to the Simien peaks, to make 2026 the year you finally go.

The Horn of Africa remains one of the last great frontiers of travel: a region of ancient cultures, untouched coastlines and landscapes that feel genuinely undiscovered. Here are seven reasons to make this your year to explore it.

1. You will have it almost to yourself

While the rest of the continent's highlights heave with tour buses, the Horn sees a tiny fraction of the visitors. Expect empty ruins, quiet reefs and markets where you are a guest, not a customer.

2. The Red Sea reefs are pristine

The Dahlak Islands off Eritrea and the reefs of the Gulf of Tadjoura are among the least-dived in the world, warm, clear and teeming with life, from coral gardens to seasonal whale sharks.

3. Living history everywhere

From Asmara's Art Deco streets to the 5,000-year-old paintings of Laas Geel and Lalibela's rock-hewn churches, the region layers millennia of human story into a single trip. Eritrea and Ethiopia have no open land border and no direct Asmara to Addis Ababa flight, so we route that combination through Cairo or Dubai and build the journey around the connections that actually run.

4. The coffee was born here

This is the birthplace of coffee, and the ceremony that surrounds it is a daily act of hospitality you will be welcomed into again and again.

5. Landscapes like nowhere else

6. It is more manageable than the headlines suggest

Conditions vary country by country, and we plan around them rather than around headlines: Somaliland and Djibouti run on ordinary tourist logistics, Eritrea on travel permits we arrange in advance, and Somalia only with the armed SPU escort the authorities require, which is included in your tour price. Our guides live here, monitor conditions daily, and will say plainly when a route is not advisable. Check your own government's current travel advice before you book.

7. Your visit makes a difference

In a region with few visitors, responsible tourism has an outsized positive impact, supporting local guides, drivers, families and heritage sites directly.
