Arrive in Hargeisa, the lively capital of Somaliland. After hotel check-in, immerse yourself in the energetic streets and bustling markets. A highlight is the Hargeisa Livestock Market, where camels, goats and sheep are traded. You will also see the iconic MiG fighter-jet war memorial and the Hargeisa Cultural Centre.

Hargeisa, Laas Geel, Berbera and Back
After breakfast, embark on a full-day excursion to Laas Geel, a remarkable complex of caves showcasing some of the most spectacular Neolithic rock paintings in Africa, dated to roughly 5,000–9,000 years old. Continue to the coastal city of Berbera, exploring an Ottoman-era mosque and traditional houses, with a late lunch in a historic Ottoman home. Tour the old town of Berbera with its Persian, Ottoman and British architecture and its untouched beaches, before returning to Hargeisa in the evening.

Travel permits & local escort
All travel outside Hargeisa requires a permit and a local escort (Special Protection Unit), which we arrange for you. Your guide handles every permission letter and all site entrance fees, so you can focus on the experience.
Vaccinations & health advice
Consult your doctor or a certified travel clinic 4–8 weeks before departure. No vaccination is specifically required for Somaliland for most travellers, but general Horn of Africa recommendations apply. If you arrive from a country with yellow-fever risk, bring a valid certificate. Depending on your itinerary your doctor may also advise on malaria prevention.
Travel insurance: why it matters
Comprehensive travel insurance is required before arrival. All international flights arrive at <strong>Egal International Airport</strong> in Hargeisa, the main gateway to Somaliland with regional connections to East Africa and the Gulf. Somali is the everyday language; Arabic is used in religious and formal settings, and English is widely spoken by guides and hotel staff. Your English-speaking local guide is your cultural bridge with communities throughout the tour.
How to dress in Somaliland
Somaliland is socially conservative and values modesty; visitors who dress respectfully are warmly welcomed.<br><strong>Women:</strong> loose long trousers, maxi skirts or long dresses, tops covering shoulders and chest, plus a light scarf for villages and religious sites.<br><strong>Men:</strong> long trousers or knee-length shorts and t-shirts or light long-sleeves (avoid sleeveless in public). Revealing clothing is not appropriate in towns, markets or public areas.

How far is Laas Geel from Hargeisa?
Laas Geel is approximately 50 km northeast of Hargeisa on the road to Berbera, a drive of around 45 to 60 minutes. All visits require a permit from Somalilands Ministry of Tourism, which we arrange for you, plus a mandatory Ministry-appointed site guide.
How old is the Laas Geel rock art?
The Laas Geel cave paintings are estimated to be between 5,000 and 11,000 years old, making them among the oldest and best-preserved rock art in Africa. They depict humpless cattle, herders and wild animals in remarkably vivid ochre, red and white pigments.
Do I need a visa for Somaliland?
All nationalities receive a Somaliland visa on arrival at Egal International Airport in Hargeisa, costing around USD 61 in cash. We provide a Letter of Invitation with your booking to simplify the process.
Can I combine Laas Geel with Berbera?
Yes. This 3-day tour can include Berbera, the historic Ottoman and British port city on the Red Sea coast, with its beaches and colonial architecture. Laas Geel lies directly on the road between Hargeisa and Berbera.
